Frequently Asked Questions

  • When you’re ready to book, just click the Book Session button in the top right corner of our website. You’ll be taken to our intake form where you can provide a few basic details. We will then reach out quickly with an email invitation to our practice to get everything started.

  • It’s completely normal to feel nervous during your first appointment, but you can think of our intake session as a relaxed, supportive conversation rather than a formal interview. Your therapist will spend some time getting to know you, give opportunities for your own questions, and ensure you feel heard from the moment we start.

The intake session is all about gathering your background history, discussing the specific challenges bringing you in, and beginning to define your goals for therapy. You don’t need to have a script or all the answers ready; we’ll provide the structure and ask the right questions to help us build a plan together, so you leave with an idea of the path forward and what our work together will entail.

  • The field of psychotherapy is a behavioral science rooted in over a century of research and drawing from rich philosophical traditions dating back thousands of years. It’s difficult to capture everything that encompasses our field in a paragraph, but these are some of the mechanisms behind its efficacy:

    • Uncovering insights and connections that explain why you feel or act the way you do

    • Providing structure and actionable steps toward change

    • Clarifying your values and motivations

    • Offering a confidential, non-judgmental space to process vulnerable events

    • Learning how to accept difficult truths

    • Finding your unique strengths

    • Structuring a plan, with accountability, to make highly specific behavioral changes or break unwanted habits

    • Processing traumatic memories so they may be integrated rather than avoided

    • Learning to face anxiety and fear so they no longer control your life

    • Applying psychological research to your daily life

  • In child and adolescent therapy, more alternative communication routes are used to avoid relying on verbal communication alone. These might include exploring family dynamics through games or observed play, using art or symbols to represent complex feelings or master skills, or playing games to increase frustration tolerance and emotional regulation skills.

Child and adolescent therapy may also involve occasional parental check-ins or status updates. We will always provide an initial orientation during the intake session to provide details and answer any questions you have.

  • We offer both, depending on where you’re located.

If you’re in the Denver, Colorado area, we’d love to see you in person at our office near Wheat Ridge. For clients elsewhere in Colorado, or for our clients in Virginia, we offer secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions. This lets us stay connected with clients in both states, even if you’re not nearby.

  • Since we’re a husband-and-wife team, we bring different personalities, life experiences, and clinical styles to the work. We recommend reading our individual bios to see whose specialization and vibe resonates with you most.

  • We value your time and ours. If you need to cancel or reschedule, we ask for at least 24 hours’ notice. This gives us a chance to offer that spot to someone else who may be waiting.

Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice, or “no-shows,” may be charged a cancellation fee, which is processed through Alma or Headway. If there is an emergency or sickness, please let us know and we will gladly waive any late cancellation fees.

  • Standard individual sessions are typically 50–55 minutes. This clinical hour gives us enough time to do meaningful work together while still leaving a few minutes at the end to check in about next steps or scheduling.

If you feel you might benefit from longer sessions or more frequent check-ins, we can talk about options during your initial consultation.

  • Insurance can be confusing, and plans vary a lot from person to person. To make things easier, we’ve created a dedicated “Insurance” page on our website that explains:

    • Which insurance plans we currently accept

    • Our billing partners

    • How out-of-network benefits and superbills work

    • What to expect for out-of-pocket costs

For the most detailed and up-to-date information, please visit the Insurance page. If you still have questions after looking it over, you’re always welcome to email us or reach out through the contact form—we’re happy to help you sort it out.
