Our Team
Matthew Barber LPC
I am an affirming, person-centered psychotherapist who specializes in helping individuals with anxiety, panic attacks, OCD and obsessive thoughts, and existential concerns. My approach is humanistic at its core, supporting your natural capacity to grow in ways that feel authentic to you while integrating evidence-based practices such as ACT, CBT, and behavioral techniques to reduce overthinking and create lasting, values-driven change.
My approach is humanistic, meaning that it leverages your own internal drive to grow and change in ways that are most authentic to you. My role is to support this process by providing a place to examine all aspects of yourself without judgement, reflect insights and observations, and challenge inconsistencies I notice. For more specific concerns, we will use evidence-based behavioral therapies to effect lasting and values-driven change.
Outside of therapy, I love hiking, rollerblading, skateboarding, tinkering, and making coffee.

I earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology and a Master of Science (MS) in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia and Colorado.
My training and background emphasized “holism", which is a philosophy that implores us to consider each individual in their unique entirety rather than attempting to categorize or use reductionist logic. People are complex and unique, and can never be reduced to a simple diagnostic label. People are always whole and complete, regardless of where they currently stand in their journey. This approach emphasizes personal growth and self-actualization as the primary goals as opposed to symptom-reduction.
During my undergraduate studies, I volunteered in research labs studying the effects of mindfulness meditation on various metrics of psychological wellbeing. I’ve always been fascinated by drugs. I have worked in a variety of treatment settings with experience in general mental health counseling, addiction counseling, facilitating group therapy, and working with individuals and couples in an outpatient group practice.

My practice specializes in helping young women and queer individuals struggling with people-pleasing, confidence issues, and boundaries within family and intimate relationships. I love to help my clients find their voice, learn to listen to their emotions without being ruled by them, and enact healthier boundaries that reflect their worth and values. I also specialize in play and expressive art therapy for children and adolescents. My style is warm and non-judgemental in its foundation, but direct and evidence-based.
My approach is rooted in person-centered philosophy and positive psychology, while drawing from evidence-based tools from DBT, CBT, and ACT. My goal for therapy is focused more on personal growth instead of symptom reduction, as I try to emphasize each client as a whole person and not a diagnosis.
It's hard to figure out who you are when you're always trying to keep everyone else happy. But you deserve to value your own needs without feeling guilt or shame. In therapy, we will navigate these complicated dynamics together so you can feel empowered, confident, and aligned with your own values.
Outside of the office, I love thrifting, interior design and decorating, cooking, baking, hiking, traveling, and spending time with our two dogs.

I earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Art (BA) in Sculpture and later my Master of Social Work (MSW). I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Virginia and Colorado.
I have a creative background, studying sculpture for my undergraduate program, exploring themes around identity. As a biracial person, I loved using my work to explore the nuances of racial identity in the United States. This led to an interest in social psychology and finding a way to apply my interests to help others.
I have experience working in a variety of treatment settings including a children’s clinic and school-based program, substance use treatment, and outpatient private practice therapy. I have training in play therapy, sand tray, and expressive therapies.
